David Zid, an ACE, APG certified trainer, has collaborated with orthopedic surgeon, Thomas H. Mallory, M.D., who is afflicted with Parkinson's disease, in the development of a Parkinson's specific fitness program designed to proactively minimize tremors and improve flexibility, stability, balance and strength. Delay the Disease contains colorful photographs of Zid demonstrating each move, as well as recommendations for exercise frequency, modification and how to adjust the workout as one improves. Parkinson's patients participating in Zid's fitness program notice improvement in walking, dressing and maintaining balance. Exercises are divided into categories (wake up call, walking and balance, cardiovascular, strength, facial and vocal, and night-time stretching.

Customer Rating: Summary: Focus on those exercises Comment: Purchased with PD[[ASIN:0470073950 Parkinson's Disease For Dummies (For Dummies (Health & Fitness)) which provides a wide range of information about PD and includes an excellent illustrated chapter on diet and exercise.
I like that Delay the Disease -Exercise and Parkinson's Disease is a spiral book with diagrams. Guidance is provided to help design a weekly schedule. Exercises are grouped by degree of difficulty and tabs allow speedy reference to them while you are working out.
Dummies is my reference tool but this book is used every day. I envision tossing this into my suitcase when travelling to ensure I do my exercises.
Customer Rating: Summary: exercise for PD people Comment: This is an excellent guide to things that will keep you flexible and balanced - so important in PD.
Customer Rating: Summary: Delay the Disease Comment: Great book. Exercises all have pictures clearly showing what to do and there are 3 levels of difficulty so people can use this at different stages of the disease. Organized my workout.
Customer Rating: Summary: Just what the Dr. ordered! Comment: This was exactly what I needed. It details a regime to follow throughout the day.
Customer Rating: Summary: Delay the Disease is user-friendly for the PD patient Comment: Parkinson's patients who buy David Zid's exercise book will have no excuse for skipping a workout regardless of where they happen to be. Nearly two dozen routines can be performed while seated-even in tight spaces like an airplane. Doing the Spider on a Mirror(fingertips of opposite hands touching, then releasing a pair at a time)might draw curious glances from other passengers, but they'll likely decide you're just a nervous flier praying for a smooth ride. Unlike other exercise books, routines covered in Delay the Disease don't call for investment in specialized equipment. Stand behind a chair and hold it while you work the knees and legs. A kitchen counter provides support for balance training. The book's design makes Delay the Disease user friendly. Each exercise is illustrated with as many as four pictures in color on heavy paper. Spiral binding makes it easy to hold the book open to the appropriate page. ~Tom P., PD exercise class participant
