Heart disease affects a lot of people in our society. In fact it is the disease that more people die of than any other. Many health experts have told us that there are links between high cholesterol and heart disease. But the number of people that are affected by this, is consistently high and despite the health profession telling us constantly, we do not seem to be getting any healthier.

One of the main reasons for this is our diet. The diet of the average American or Western European is not good. It tends to be filled with food that has a high proportion of bad fats and is processed rather than fresh. Most doctors agree that eating a diet that has fresh fruit and vegetables, cereals and lean protein is good for us. So why don't we just eat well and live longer? One of the main reasons is the advertising that we see for food that encourages us to buy processed foods. Also many people do not want to do without the foods that they like and so never really get started on a healthy diet.

But there is no reason that you have to give up all of the foods that you like, even the really bad ones! It is really a matter of moderation. If your diet is basically good then there may be less chance that you will get high cholesterol and heart disease. That does not mean that you should not go out for a burger and beer on the weekend if you diet is good and well balanced through the rest of the week. Of course it would be better if your diet was good all of the time. But even if it just good most of the time then it may mean that you chances of getting theses diseases are reduced.

Also there is no reason to think that you need to give up pleasures such as going out for a drink. Of course it is not good to drink too much regularly, but that does not mean that you need to give up drinking altogether. Some recent research has suggested that drinks such as red wine can have a positive effect on health if taken in moderation. It is good to try to improve the way that you live, even if you do not make huge changes, it can still have a really good impact on you health. But before you make any changes to your diet it is a good idea to see you doctor first.
